‘Dementia design’ in focus at Salford conference

IHEEM will be among those supporting a conference on 14 September entitled ‘Dementia Design – Making a positive difference to those living with dementia’, organised by The University of Salford School of The Built Environment and School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work, and to be held from 9.30 am to 4.00 pm at the University’s Mary Seacole Building.

The conference will look at ‘current and future developments’, and ‘where design is making a positive difference to the quality of life of people living with dementia’. The organisers said: “The design and use of the environment, care homes, hospitals, art, the ‘virtual environment’, and services, will all be explored, and delegates will also have the opportunity to identify potential partners for research and development for their next project.” The keynote address will be given by the Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP (pictured), Vice-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia. Presentations and workshop sessions will be delivered by the King’s Fund’s Enhancing the Healing Environment team, industrial partners, designers, charities, researchers, health and social care professionals, and people living with dementia. There will also be the opportunity to join the Dementia Design Network, a European research and development network that will be launched at the event. Rob Smith, a past IHEEM President, is a visiting Professor at the University’s School of The Built Environment. For more information, T: 0161 295 5950, or email: v.l.beckett@salford.ac.uk
