Tailor-made MRI room lighting launched

Whitecroft Lighting has launched Esprit MRI, a luminaire specifically designed for use in rooms containing MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scanners. The Esprit MRI is a 75 W tungsten halogen down lighter with no ferrous metals (iron or steel) or electromagnetic components that could be attracted by the magnets in the scanner.

Iain Wilkie, the company’s lighting design manager commented: “Whitecroft had three large PFI projects with similar requirements for MRI rooms, which is often within the scope of a specialist MRI room fit out contractor. In wanting to offer a full package to the client, we had to understand the specification and special requirements relating to magnetic fields and electrical interference. Considering an existing product portfolio, Whitecroft’s designers developed the new specification based on the Esprit range.”

The clever design of the Esprit MRI means that no control gear is used and thus avoids interference with the highly sensitive equipment housed in the radiology department of a hospital. This luminaire highlights the company’s expertise in designing solutions for specific healthcare applications, as has been demonstrated recently in major healthcare projects, including Derby, Manchester and Romford hospitals.
