Mood lighting assists patient healing

Toks Adeniji, chief executive of lighting manufacturer Ardent Products, explains how to use the latest mood lighting to create an optimum healing and working environment.

Improving the environment in a hospital ward can cut the recovery time for non-operative patients by 14-21%.

The statistics speak for themselves. After decades of dull, institutionalised hospital interiors, the case has been made for a more attractive NHS. Of the many design adjustments which can make a difference, the use of ambient lighting and colour can be a cost-effective way of making spaces look lively and welcoming, rather than drab and functional.

Given the sheer scale of the various activities happening under one roof, achieving the right lighting in a hospital environment presents a serious challenge. Any creative lighting scheme still has to balance form with functionality, a 24/7 schedule and a diverse audience with different needs – from the apprehensive very young to the elderly suffering from poor eyesight. Clinical and administrative staff will require crisp, high-tech lighting to stimulate high levels of performance, for example, while patients will prefer a softer, almost domestic approach. The latest cutting edge lighting schemes have seen radiology suites transformed with animated light and graphics played out on ceilings and walls, while other Trusts have used art and ambient lighting to dramatic effect in cancer clinics. Far less ambitious retrofits, however, can still make a big impact for far lower budget than might originally be anticipated.

Balancing the books
With recent headlines about the enduring cash crisis in the NHS, it is often tempting to go for the cheapest lighting option on the market. With waiting lists on the up again, surely it is better to spend the budget fulfilling clinical requirements, rather than design ones?
