Five companies – Balfour Beatty, Skanska, Vinci, Willmott Dixon, and Kier – have submitted tenders to the West London Mental Health NHS Trust in a bid to become main contractor for the Broadmoor Hospital redevelopment.
The winners of the ‘circa £150 million’ contract will construct the new building (see artist’s impression) within the existing grounds of the famous Berkshire mental healthcare facility. The new Broadmoor Hospital will incorporate 234 beds, providing accommodation for 210 male patients and space for 24 flexible beds. Construction is scheduled to take just under four years, and the new Hospital will house patients from January 2017. David Phillips, redevelopment programme manager, said: “Senior managers at the Trust are now reviewing each application, during which we will be assessing each company’s past experience and performance, their ability to provide value-for-money for the NHS, and what specific skills their organisation and employees can bring to such a largescale project.” Redevelopment background preparation work is almost complete, with enabling works underway, and final project approval from the Department of Health expected soon. Under current project timescales, the Trust will be required to name its successful bidder by May this year, after which a start of construction on site is expected by December.
