The ‘widely anticipated’ launch of the Edgbaston Medical Quarter was officially announced last month by Laura Rivkin, head of Strategy Implementation from the Office of Life Science, part of the Government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
‘Catapulting awareness’ of the Birmingham district as an international centre for medical excellence, the 12.5 km2 Quarter will be managed and promoted by life science specialist Medilink WM, which says locally-headquartered property investment and development company, Calthorpe Estates, has been a driving force during its development over the past seven years. Through this collaborative work, the Edgbaston Medical Quarter has already garnered support ‘from hundreds of organisations and individuals within the area keen to see further investment and development’. It is hoped that the Quarter will provide a global platform for world-class medical and healthcare provision in the district, and offer collaborative and commercial opportunities. Medilink WM says there are 327 medical and life science organisations, including 130 hospitals and specialist care centres, 58 medical research centres, and 12 training facilities, ‘within walking distance’ around Edgbaston.
