Rebuild requirement swiftly fulfilled

In October 2005 in northern Pakistan a devastating earthquake destroyed buildings and killed thousands, yet left Kunhar Christian Hospital remarkably still standing. Health Estate Journal reports on efforts to maintain healthcare delivery under extraordinary circumstances.

Fortunately for Kunhar Christian Hospital (KCH), help soon arrived in a variety of forms as work began to restore the damaged hospital infrastructure and ensure continued healthcare for those in need.

Positioned just 12 miles from the 100% devastation of Bakalot, where over 23,000 are confirmed dead, and 10 miles from at the epicentre of the earthquake, stands KCH. Incredibly not one building fell, so no one was hurt amongst the staff and scores of patients present for treatment that day. However while the hospital is the only major building still standing in its immediate area, even within the hospital compound the majority of buildings have been damaged to varying degrees.

Some of the hospital buildings are now closed as they have been declared unsafe and the water tower over the building is severely damaged. One of the stairwells is also very badly damaged with cracks through the concrete frame and the brick infill panels having fallen out. One of the hospital buildings, originally declared unsafe and closed, is now back in use having had the entire ground floor rebuilt while leaving the undamaged first floor untouched. A second larger accommodation building is now undergoing the same process but is still some way from being returned to use. A water tower over the main stairwell in the wards building is severely damaged and the stairwell closed off. A second stairwell in another building is also very badly damaged with cracks through the concrete frame and the brick infill panels have also fallen out.
