Lister Hospital, a 480-bed district general hospital in Stevenage, recently turned to Dalkia for the delivery of heating, hot water, and electricity, in a project expected to save the NHS Trust involved around £500,000, and reduce its carbon footprint by 4,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
The £8 million contract with East and North NHS Hertfordshire NHS Trust entails a £2.8 m upgrade of a 40-year-old energy centre, and a 15-year contract energy management (CEM) agreement. The new Energy Centre, maintained ‘24/7’ by Dalkia’s local mobile teams, was officially opened recently by Stephen McPartland MP. Lister Hospital offers general and specialist services for patients across much of Hertfordshire and south Bedfordshire, and a full range of medical and surgical specialties. Dalkia has supplied a 1.4 Mwe CHP unit delivered through its specialist CHP division, Cogenco, and three new boilers. The CHP system will reportedly lower the Trust’s carbon emissions by nearly 20%, exceeding the 10% reduction target set by the Department of Health for NHS organisations to achieve by 2015. With such a large cut in energy expenditure, the Trust will make unitary monthly payments to Dalkia, funded from the energy savings achieved through the plant installation and usage.
