Patients and staff help choose designs

A wide selection of Altro flooring and wallcovering products have been used in the award-winning Ferndene Children and Young People’s Centre in Prudhoe, Northumberland, to create a healing environment that, according to the company, ‘is visually stunning, as well as safe, hard-wearing, and hygienic’.

HEJ reports.

Situated on the fringes of Northumberland’s countryside, Ferndene Children and Young People’s Centre is a purpose-built, £27 million, 40-bed inpatient centre, located on the former Prudhoe Hospital site 12 miles west of Newcastle, which was constructed by Laing O’Rourke for Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust. The facility, which opened in the autumn of 2011, provides assessment and treatment for young people with complex health, behavioural, and emotional needs, including those with learning disabilities. Ferndene is reportedly the first facility to provide such an integrated service in the country. The 6,000 m2 building was conceived as a ‘hand-shaped’ design, with four bedroom blocks spanning out as ‘fingers’ from a central activity building in the palm. All the young people have their own bedrooms, most with en suite facilities. There is also a wide range of therapy, educational, social and recreational facilities; a flat for visiting families; and office accommodation for staff.
