Broadmoor scheme preferred tenderer announced

West London Mental Health NHS Trust has named Kier as preferred tenderer for the Broadmoor Hospital redevelopment scheme. (HEJ – February 2013) in a project set to ‘transport the 150-year-old hospital into the 21st century’, providing ‘a modern, fit-for-purpose environment for services’, and securing the future of high secure mental healthcare locally.

The announcement coincides with confirmation of project support from the Trust’s strategic healthcare partners, NHS Trust Development Authority (NTDA) and NHS England. The DH is expected to make its decision on the Full Business Case shortly, at which point the process to officially appoint the main contractor can begin to ensure an on-site start by December this year.
Scheduled to open to patients in January 2017, the new buildings will, the Trust explains, ‘allow staff to provide the latest mental healthcare treatments, which, up to now, have proved difficult and costly due to the current Victorian layout’. ‘Designed to modern environmental standards’, the new hospital will equally be ‘much more energy and cost-efficient to run’.
Vickie Holcroft, programme director, said “This is the biggest redevelopment in high secure mental health care to date, so it was essential that the contractor selected had the experience to manage and complete such large-scale projects. Throughout the selection process, Kier clearly demonstrated best value-for-money, commitment to quality, and evidence of creating a wide range of similar structures both on time, and to budget.”
