Accurately measuring ‘green’ credentials

José Túnica, managing director, Carla Planas, BREEAM assessor, and Raquel Clemente, LEED AP BREEAM assessor, at Spanish independent engineering firm, JG Ingenieros, examine the impact on the design of hospitals and other healthcare buildings of some of the key environmental assessment schemes now in use internationally.

LEED, a certification process developed by USGBC; BREEAM, developed by BRE, and the VERDE tool, developed by GBCe, are well-known and prestigious environmental and energy assessment tools for buildings, which contribute to the application of sustainable construction strategies, and provide a set of performance indicators for the standardisation, transparency, and consistency, of reported data to justify the implementation of energy efficiency measures and the savings attained through these. The growing use of these certification systems in healthcare facilities is having a notable impact on the sustainability level of this type of building.
