Kalpesh Shah, Healthcare product manager – Renal, ELGA Process Water, explains how a water treatment and purification system installed by the company as part of the recent £19 m refurbishment of the Cossham Memorial Hospital in Bristol is providing a constant supply of Renal Association-compliant water to a new dialysis unit, and saving the facility’s operator significant sums annually in the process.
The Cossham Memorial Hospital in Bristol first opened in 1907, having been funded under the will of Victorian colliery owner, and local MP, Handel Cossham, ‘for the treatment and relief of sick and injured persons of both sexes’. It has recently undergone an extensive £19 million refurbishment funded by NHS South Gloucestershire, and the new Cossham Hospital will be part of a network of community hospitals and healthcare centres being created throughout Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and North Somerset.
Many original features retained
While the refurbishment retained many original features of the historic listed building, the facilities inside are ultramodern, and include the area’s first midwife-led birth centre. As part of the refurbishment, under a partnership agreement with the then South Gloucestershire PCT, the North Bristol NHS Trust funded a brand new renal dialysis unit, which opened to patients in October 2012. The 750 m2 Cossham Dialysis Unit is a standalone building behind the main hospital, with the capacity to provide care for 96 patients per day, with 24 dialysis stations.
