Tower crane stability: learning the lessons

Tower cranes are a vital element of the construction process. There are 1,500 cranes in the UK and at any time around 1,000 are in use. While the collapse of tower cranes is rare in the UK, accidents and near misses do occur.

Failures of any part of the crane or load carrying systems are likely to result in injury to members of the public outside the boundaries of the site as well as crane operators and personnel working inside the site. Collapse of tower cranes also presents a risk to adjacent railways and roads.

Ciria’s new guidance, Tower Crane Stability (C654), aims to bring together important practical and design issues that impact health and safety and to present a current understanding of best practice based on the experience of a wide crosssection of the industry.

The guidance is aimed at planners, architects, permanent works engineers, site supervisors and all those involved in the design, planning, communication and management of tower cranes who need to understand the issues and be educated in the safe use of tower cranes. The report includes specific guidance for designers of temporary works involving tower cranes, the understanding of wind effects, other loading and support considerations, and factors of safety and design of foundations.
