With the NHS having committed to reduce its carbon footprint by 10% by 2015, Alan Newman, a partner at building services engineers, Troup Bywaters + Anders (TB+A), describes how, with the company’s expertise and help, customer, the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, ‘surpassed the targets two years in advance’.
As he explains, the key element of an ambitious carbon reduction scheme that won the 2013 IHEEM Healthcare Estates Sustainability Award (HEJ – November 2013) was a new combined heat and power-based energy centre at the Trust’s Lister Hospital in Stevenage.
The award-winning combined heat and power (CHP) scheme was delivered by a project team of professionals, each with an in-depth knowledge in their field. However, although this article touches on the project as a whole, my key aim is to detail my experiences, and to explain TB+A’s ‘unique approach’ as building services consultants during the journey to success.
At the time of writing, in November 2013, the scheme has been operational for nearly a year, and the Trust is well on its way to bettering the project’s guaranteed saving of circa £650,000 annually, while also meeting the projected 4,020 tonne annual carbon reduction goal that was set.
