New LINAC suite for Leicester

A design services team at Pick Everard has been commissioned by Interserve Project Services for a new LINAC suite at University Hospitals of Leicester’s Royal Infirmary (LRI) site, the second to be constructed as an extension to the Osborne Building.

Pick Everard architects, structural engineers, and mechanical and electrical engineers, will be working with appointed contractor Interserve Project Services, with construction to be completed by the end of the year.

Located in a protected chamber, the linear accelerator is a powerful machine producing tightly focused beams of X-rays that target tumours. To block radiation and to protect everyone outside the chamber, it is constructed of very dense (Magnetite) concrete, and is planned with overlapping walls up to five feet thick. This means there is no need for heavy internal doors and makes access for patients easier. With a flat concrete roof of similar thickness to the walls, the extension will be clad in brickwork to match the existing building. As well as the equipment chamber, the building will house a control room, plant room and offices.

Peter Collier, senior partner at Pick Everard said: “We are very pleased to be providing the design team for this project at Leicester Royal Infirmary, which is an important addition to our growing portfolio in the healthcare sector.”

Pick Everard has a proven track record of healthcare work in the UK, including its recent appointment as technical advisor to the South Midlands Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT) project, in Northampton (£27 million) and Corby (£9.7 million), one of the 51 NHS LIFT schemes in the UK. The practice’s recent project history in healthcare has included a medical school at Keele University, a student health centre at Sheffield University, a women’s clinic and breast care unit for Southend Hospital NHS Trust and a £17.3 million project extending and improving facilities for Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) at University Hospitals of Leicester’s Glenfield Hospital site.
