Meeting roofing needs

Flag UK’s FLAGON SFc single ply membrane has been selected for Brent Emergency Care & Diagnostic Centre (BECad). It provided the flexibility, durability and sustainability required for the curved roofing canopies.

BECad is part of a £56 million development at Central Middlesex Hospital, which provides A&E services, 215 beds and three theatre rooms. Flag UK provided 850m2 of Flagon SFc that was installed on two canopy areas of the roof, providing the visual focal point of the BECad unit. Roofing contractors 5M worked with technical advisors at Flag UK to provide a waterproofing solution to cover the steel framed deck.

Senior estimator for 5M, Dave Marsh said: “Single ply was the only product that could lend itself to the detailing required on this job as there were some unusual shapes to work with and intricate welding to contend with around the circular plant room area.”

5M fixed a combination of decks to the canopies and where the underside was visible, it was coated with metal deck PVC2 before applying a minimum thickness of insulation and then mechanically fixing the FLAGON SFc. This particular build up ensured that the fastenings were not visible from the underside.

FLAGON SFc is a malleable synthetic membrane that has a high resistance to weathering and ultraviolet rays. The product used on the BECad project has a light grey finish in keeping with the steel framework of the canopies.

The main contractors on the BECad project were Bouygues UK.
