Mammoth order for Singapore project

A flooring specialist describes how a range of its products were chosen for use in two adjoining new hospitals in Singapore that form a S$1 bn care ‘cluster’ for the west of the city-state.

Two new hospitals in Singapore that form a new integrated healthcare hub, that feature a range of innovations in patient treatment and care, and are reportedly the country’s first such healthcare facilities built together as an integrated development to complement each other’s capabilities and services, were officially opened by Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, last October. Operated by Jurong Health, a public healthcare ‘cluster’ formed to facilitate the integration of healthcare services in the west of Singapore, the Ng Teng Fong Hospital and Jurong Community Hospital feature an extensive array of Gerflor flooring, selected, as the company explains in this article, for a combination of outstanding aesthetics, durability, safety, and hard wear.

Jurong Health is the public healthcare ‘cluster’ formed to facilitate the integration of healthcare services and care processes for the community in the west of Singapore. Working with its community partners, Jurong Health says its aim is ‘to integrate and simplify healthcare so that it is accessible to every home in the peninsula’. It was a tall order, but a dream made possible by one man – property tycoon, Ng Teng Fong, the founder of Singaporean property developer, Far East Organization, and its counterpart, Sino Group, in Hong Kong. On his death in 2010 Ng Teng Fong is said to have been Singapore’s richest man. His family donated S$125 million (£59 m) to the hospital project, and the name change to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital was announced in the Singapore Parliament in March 2011. The hospital was originally named Jurong General Hospital. The two hospitals that form the ‘cluster’ cost S$1 bn (£475 m) to build.

Medical care is, of course, not just about treating sickness; it is equally about preventing illness, detecting it early, and managing it to reduce complications. The vision at Jurong Health is about ‘transforming care’, the goal being to ‘to move away from the traditional focus on illness-care, to one of keeping the community healthy’. Besides easy accessibility to public transport services via Jurong East MRT station and Jurong East Bus Interchange, Jurong Health’s new integrated healthcare hub enjoys seamless connectivity to the surrounding retail, dining, and entertainment facilities. The two new facilities are based on international standards of hospital construction, and feature ‘the latest hospital design and medical treatment trends, coupled to the unique design of the building exterior and interior’.
