An online scheme that has helped NHS Trusts save £517,000 in two years by sharing resources such as furniture and medical equipment has set itself the target of supporting NHS clients in saving £1 m this year.
In addition, the goal is to cut waste arisings by 100 tonnes, and CO2 output by 250 tonnes.
Daniel O’Connor, founder of Warp It – which allows NHS Trust staff to post details of unwanted items online for others to claim, said: “The scheme’s goal is to extend the life of furniture and equipment by making it easy for staff to swap and trade surplus assets between departments, or from one Trust to another. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has saved £17,000 a month, while others have seen massive savings by claiming much-needed equipment from organisations further away. NHS Tayside saved £15,000 on claiming 40 660-litre bins from a South London Trust.”
The Warp It reuse network allows staff to post pictures of available items, and ‘manages the legal aspects’ to protect Trusts from misuse.
Since 2011, Warp It has reportedly saved customers £5 million in avoided procurement costs, and facilitated the donation of £700,000 of assets to charity.
