Accurate data reduces waiting times

The 12 operating theatre suites at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford are now running at over 90% of available capacity, thanks to the accuracy of the data on its Oasis Patient Administration System (PAS).

Supplied by Capula Healthcare, the Oasis system has helped the hospital to improve its performance and cut waiting times for elective surgery. The system displays occupancy for all seven days of the week on one screen. By clicking on to any individual session, full details of its occupancy can be pulled up. Staff can scroll forward week by week to view future allocations, making it easier to see where there are vacant slots in operating theatres.

Should vacant slots occur, the waiting list functionality of Oasis works at two levels: staff can search the PAS to check how long patients have been waiting for their treatment and act accordingly, and they can also identify patients with an appropriate need who can come in at short notice to fill any gaps that may arise.

The success of the Royal Surrey County Hospital’s approach is down to the way staff use the Oasis solution to log patient details. According to Robin Jago, critical care and anaesthetics manager: “When we enter data into the waiting list we can tick a box that indicates that the patient can come in quickly, we also record all available mobile phone numbers. This ensures, as much as possible, that we receive a swift response to any offer of an earlier appointment. As a result, we rarely fail to fill a vacant slot, and this has helped us to reduce our overall waiting times.”
