Dyson technology for Medirest

Healthcare hotel services company Medirest is to introduce the new Dyson Airblade super hand-dryer across its UK food preparation facilities following the recent launch of the innovative and ultra hygienic high speed system by Dyson.

Medirest’s decision to introduce the new hand-dryers as part of the company’s a+ best practice cleaning system, comes after it successfully trialled the Dyson Airblade within its new Steamplicity Cuisine Centre in St Albans earlier this year.

Unlike conventional hand-dryers, the system uses around 83% less power and dries hands in as little as 10 seconds using a sheet of air to wipe moisture away. The Dyson Digital Motor (DDM) produces an air stream flowing at 400 mph, which is channelled through a 0.3 millimetre gap – no thicker than an eyelash. The system also promises to be cost-effective. Dyson’s literature states: “If a washroom uses 200 paper towels per day (most people use two at a time), that will cost £951 more to run each year than a washroom with the Dyson Airblade. That’s a 99% saving per washroom year.”

The system goes a step further in the fight against infection too with the incorporation of BioCote advanced silver antimicrobial technology, which, manufacturers claim, is up to 99.9% effective against both gram positive and gram negative microbes, including MRSA and C.difficile. BioCote can be used on products such as cubicle curtains and patient case notepaper; surfaces which can potentially contaminate clean hands immediately before a patient is touched.

“We found the new system dried hands almost instantly making it much more hygienic and user friendly than other conventional systems which normally take about 35 seconds,” says general manager of the Cuisine Centre, Justin Woodley. “This makes the Dyson Airblade dryer more energy efficient, cost effective and better for the environment.”
