Carter Report will be a key focus in Telford

A look ahead to this month’s 2016 HeƒmA Leadership Forum in Telford, where among the key talking points will be the findings and recommendations of Lord Carter’s team.

This year’s HeƒmA conference and exhibition – the 2016 HeƒmA Leadership Forum – will be held at the Telford International Centre from 19-20 May, and themed ‘Lean on me – Compassion, Culture & Compliance’. With the findings and recommendations of Lord Carter and his team likely to be fresh in delegates’ minds, this year’s conference will include an update on the Carter team’s work, and a look at ‘The challenges ahead for the whole NHS in delivering the Lord Carter Productivity and Efficiency Programme’, by Peter Sellars, head of profession, NHS Estates & Facilities, Productivity and Efficiency, at the Department of Health. This will be followed by a panel discussion on this highly topical issue. HEJ editor, Jonathan Bailie, looks ahead to the event.

Peter Sellars’ presentation – which should be particularly interesting given that he has been working closely with Lord Carter during the Labour Peer and his team’s review of the ‘productivity and efficiency’ of a selected ‘cohort’ of English NHS hospitals, having himself visited around 40 NHS Trusts in the past nine months – will be followed by a panel discussion on the ramifications of the team’s recommendations for the NHS across England going forward. With over 35 years’ experience managing and delivering professional healthcare estates and facilities services, Peter Sellars has held senior management roles at national, strategic, and operational levels, within the Department of Health and the NHS.

In his current role, he is responsible for ensuring the delivery of Ministerial priorities for efficient and effective NHS estates and facilities, particularly around supporting patient safety and care, with a focus on the NHS Constitution’s commitment to patients, staff, and the wider public. A Chartered Engineer and accredited NHS and OGC Central Government High Risk Gateway Reviewer, he is currently leading the Estates & Facilities Efficiency project as part of the Lord Carter NHS Procurement & Efficiency Programme. This project will set out the plan for the delivery of circa £1 bn in estates and facilities-related efficiency savings annually over the next four years.
