The new Evelina Children's Hospital has scooped another award, this time the British Construction Industry (BCI) Judges' Special Award for a building that the judges consider to be particularly inspirational.
The BCI said: “The Evelina Children’s Hospital wins the Judges’ Special Award because of its delightful and outstanding qualities, which the judges hope will be enjoyed by patients, relatives and staff for generations. The grand conservatory allows daylight to penetrate deep into the building, and the care and attention given to this project represent the highest aspirations of healthcare providers.
“The Evelina demonstrates that hospital buildings do not have to be depersonalised, uniformly decorated, enclosed spaces lit by fluorescent tubes.” The 140-bed Evelina cost £60 m to build and was funded by a grant of £50 m from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity and £10 m from the NHS.
