IHEEM has welcomed its new chief executive, John Long MBE, who succeeds Bill Pym.

John Long joined the Royal Navy in 1966 and subsequently served in 13 Royal Navy ships accumulating 26 years in seagoing appointments.

The ships in which he served included a coastal survey vessel, a mine countermeasures vessel, frigates, destroyers and all three aircraft carriers. Other appointments afloat included three years’ service in the Royal Yacht Britannia, and lead staff warfare roles with the Commander UK Maritime Task Group.

He has held recent shore appointments in the Ministry of Defence, responsible for future undersea warfare operational capability and advising UK industry and overseas navies on defence capability procurement.

His final naval appointment was as executive officer, Royal Hospital Haslar. He has recently been responsible for corporate governance and resilience planning at the Royal West Sussex NHS Trust.

John Long’s home is in Chichester. He is a trustee of West Sussex Association for the Blind and is a watch leader on the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s ships Lord Nelson and Tenacious. He also races his own classic sailing boat in Chichester Harbour and the Solent.
