£20 m Bradford project wins inspectors’ praise

Construction at a major Yorkshire hospital has received a 90% assessment rating following an independent inspection of how the team involved is ‘respecting’ the community, and working around a challenging live environment.

The score was given for work at Bradford Royal Infirmary by a BAM team two-thirds of the way through an 80-week programme to create a new wing and critical care unit. Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) monitor, David Pearson, said: “The site is impressive, and gives a very positive image of the industry to all who see it, including pupils of some of the county’s major schools and colleges.”

Working underneath two live wards to create the CCU, the BAM team has held a workshop with hospital staff to help them understand and anticipate the works’ impact, and discuss ways site staff can minimise nuisance. With some noisy work expected under wards, however, BAM has installed sound baffling and applied film to windows.

The scheme has created three apprenticeships and five work placements for local students, placing some £10 m of orders with firms in Bradford and Leeds, and even more with companies in Sheffield, Barnsley, and Hull. Services sourced locally include groundworks, carpentry, scaffolding, security, excavation, and curtain walling.

BAM has rescheduled many deliveries to avoid busy times, while ‘softer touches’ include the 100-strong workforce supporting the hospital’s restaurant, and pupils from Bingley Grammar School visiting and providing artwork and posters to brighten up the hoardings.

BAM will also host students from Bradford College – which it also built – to assist with their ‘step into construction’ course.
