Sika provided the durable, hygienic coating system to ensure that the walls and floors of one of Europe’s largest biomedical research facilities world remain infection and contamination-free
Recently opened, the new Francis Crick Institute in London is Europe’s largest medical research facility of its kind. When fully opened in 2017, the 12-storey building will house 1,250 top scientists undertaking research into the causes of conditions such as cancer and heart disease. As the building included areas for storage and disposal of biological and hazardous waste, the coating system selected needed to offer optimum resistance to heavy footfall and high-pressure, chemicallybound cleaning fluids. Critically, the system also had to meet Containment Levels 1-4 for each of the Biological Agents Hazard Groups, as outlined by HSE. Sika’s proven, high-performance hygiene coating range ‘more than met the requirements’.
The centre required different levels of wall reinforcement throughout the building, adding to the complex nature of the project for installers, Cousins. Sika said: “The easy-to-apply properties of our hygiene coating systems, and the unstinting support of our on-site technical team, meant potential challenges were comfortably overcome to ensure surface work was completed to the client’s strict 18-month deadline.”
