A new Healthcare Centre of Excellence at the company’s Miskin site, near Cardiff, recently formally opened by Wales’s First Minister, The Rt Hon Carwyn Jones AM, provides global precision engineering company, Renishaw, with a facility both for the manufacture of custom medical devices, and education and training for the life sciences community.
The company said: “Located close to our manufacturing operations, the Centre of Excellence highlights Renishaw’s continuing technology advances for the healthcare sector, including patientspecific implants, dentistry, and neurosurgery. It contains a ‘mock’ non sterile operating theatre and facilities for education, training, workshops and lectures, plus a facility for the manufacture of class 3 custom medical devices.”
The lead-lined theatre suite ‘mimics a real-life hospital setting, but without the complication of a sterile environment’. Surgeons can be trained to perform highly complex stereotactic neurosurgery procedures using Renishaw’s neurological products. The suite also includes video and audio technology, for live streaming of training to the adjacent lecture theatre or to the neurosurgeon’s support team, who may be located in another country.
