Swanswell design makes special statement

The Swanswell Point Mental Health Resource on the site of the former Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital has been nominated for a Coventry Design Award and shortlisted for national architectural awards.

Built on a triangular site, the Resource uses a combination of materials and designs to create a noninstitutional appearance, inside and out. Bricks from Ibstock’s Atlas Smooth Blue range were used on the exterior to contrast panelling on the main elevations. The entrance to the facility features a curved façade of curtain walling which extends into the point of a wedge.

Other features of the building, which houses therapy, outpatient facilities and community team services, include pitched northern lights and large glazed panels to maximise natural light and ventilation and include the views over the neighbouring Swanswell Park.

Thushari Wickramapala of Aedas Architects Ltd, said: “We wanted to make a statement with the architecture and materials used on the building, and create a building that would enhance the regeneration of the area.”
