He considers the training implications for maintaining and managing water systems in healthcare organisations now that the changes are being evaluated, and provides some personal thoughts on them.
The ripple effects of the revised guidelines presented in the most recent HTM 04-01, Safe water in healthcare premises, published last year, are really only now starting to be fully assessed. A number of changes within the guidelines – and in particular the introduction of a Water Safety Group and Water Safety Plans – although previously included in the Addendum, have greater impact than many originally thought. Training has to be considered more thoroughly, and must once and for all move away from a ‘tick box’ mentality.
