Lights out at Epsom and St Helier

About 40 light bulbs have been removed from hospital corridors at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, the BBC has reported.

The Trust, which runs the Epsom General Hospital and St Helier Hospital in south London, has removed bulbs from corridors and communal areas as part of a cost saving scheme, the report said.

A Trust statement said that no clinical areas would be affected by the removal of bulbs and that the exercise was part of a scheme to cut £3 million electricity bills.

The statement said that it was “imperative for the Trust to cut electric bills after significant price hikes.” The statement also said that the Trust had been given funding by the Strategic Health Authority to explore lighting and heating controls so that energy efficiency could be improved.
