Macmillan unit’s striking new artworks

Cancer patients at Tameside Hospital are benefiting from a major redevelopment of their local Macmillan Unit, with arts consultancy, Willis Newson, having brought in artist, Chris Tipping, to create a welcoming, healing environment, with integrated artworks providing a connection with the beautiful local Tameside landscapes.

Macmillan appointed architects, IBI, landscape designers, KKE Architects, and arts and health consultants, Willis Newson, to ‘totally reimagine the space architecturally and artistically’.

Chris Tipping created a large-scale panorama which takes patients and visitors on a walk inspired by a real 12mile hike he took through the local countryside with a former patient.

The redesigned space brings different services under one roof, minimising patient travel, maximising natural light, and demonstrating Macmillan’s patientcentred approach to cancer care.

Jane Willis, director of Willis Newson, said: “The passion and unwavering support the Tameside Macmillan team has shown for the art programme has been a key factor in the success of this project, alongside the team’s commitment to our shared vision. It has been a pleasure to work with an artist as dedicated and professional as Chris, and to see the artwork evolve from his original photography, through hand-drawn sketches, to a crisp digital finish.”
