First residents arrive at care home

Kenway Court, a new John Grooms’ residential home for disabled adults in Southendon- Sea, has welcomed its first residents. Designed by Norwich and London-based LSI Architects, the 24-place registered care home with nursing for the John Grooms Charity has been designed to support independence and accessible accommodation to the highest standards for its residents with physical disability.

The new building occupies an irregular trapezoidal urban site, bounded by railway sidings and existing housing. Externally, the design features a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional pitched roof volumes, with a combination of brickwork, render and timber cladding. First floor projecting bays have been configured to avoid overlooking neighbouring gardens.

The interior design reflects the concept of an internal street scene where residents can enjoy a range of both private and communal spaces with high levels of assistive technology offering maximum independence for each individual. Features include automatic doors, windows, curtains, lights and controls to all domestic appliances; flush thresholds, fully accessible lifts and purpose designed en-suite bathrooms. The main communal spaces are connected to private gardens, with full height glazing set back from the main building line to offer shelter and shade.

Landscape design has been carefully considered and includes a conical glass water feature as a focal point. A bright, contemporary feel has been achieved throughout by combining warm colours, tactile finishes and large window openings.

David Newnham, John Grooms’ director of services and development, said: “LSI Architects has been commissioned to design a number of our care homes because of their design quality and expertise in the residential and healthcare sector as well as their willingness to be involved in close resident consultation. The modern and innovative exterior and interior design of Kenway Court incorporates the practice’s long-standing experience and understanding of our clients and their needs. They have refined the schedule of accommodation while further enhancing functionality and value for money, and while maintaining an important focus on inclusivity and accessibility. The practice develops schemes to an exceptional standard and our residents at Kenway Court are delighted with the outcome – a new home which demonstrates that good design, aimed at the end user, results in an environment which is safe, welcoming, accessible and enjoyable to use.”
