Lone worker support for midwives

North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust is safeguarding the welfare of its community midwives with lone worker support systems from Argyll Telecom.

The North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust operates an acute general hospital serving the communities of the London Borough of Enfield and Haringey and surrounding areas. Located in Edmonton on the Enfield/Haringey borders, the Trust serves a diverse and, in places, highly dependant population of around 250,000 people.

Staff security is a primary concern for the Trust whose 49 community midwives regularly work alone in deprived areas and are often called out at night. To ensure their safety the Trust needed to provide them with a personal alarm system that would enable the midwife to call for assistance whenever and wherever it might be needed.

After investigating a range of safety systems, Henry Grant, Head of Security at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, selected a mix of solutions from Argyll Telecom from which the Trust’s managers could choose. These included Argyll’s IdentiCare lone worker device, which looks like a normal ID card-holder but is equipped with mobile telephone technology and its CommuniCare service which enables lone workers to summon assistance from a mobile phone or specialist device should they find themselves in a potentially abusive situation.
