Great Ormond Street awards cleaning contract

London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) has awarded a five-year cleaning contract to MITIE’s Health a nd Hygiene division. A 300 strong team will provide 24 hour cleaning services, 365 days a year to all hospital areas, including wards, consulting rooms and public areas.

The cleaning team will use new equipment from Nilfisk-Advance, including BA 650S high- productivity scrubber dryers and HDS 2000 ultraquiet vacuum cleaners.

The BA 650S scrubber dryer is a walkbehind model with a 220 rpm brush speed, designed to make floor maintenance fast and efficient. Mike Griffin, healthcare operations manager at MITIE said: “We chose this pedestrian version, rather than one of the larger ride-ons, because it is light and easy to manoeuvre around beds and corridors.”

The machine also features a choice of three different brush sizes to suit different cleaning requirements.

Furthermore, operatives can change the deck from disc to cylindrical in just 30 seconds, without the need for special tools. The machine’s ECO mode concept saves water and allows continued working for 1.5 hours without having to refill the tank.

The Nilfisk HDS 2000 vacuum cleaners have a triple HEPA filtration system to minimise the amount of dust thrown back into the air. Mike Griffin added: “Obviously it is vital to keep noise levels as low as possible when you are cleaning in this sort of environment. Nilfisk’s HDS 2000 vacs combine exceptionally quiet operation with powerful suction and filtration.” The machine incorporates two sound barriers - one in the main body of the machine and another in the motor cassette - to “trap” sound and so reduce noise output. When operated at low speed the sound level is just 44 dB (tested to BS5415). The HDS 2000 produces an efficient 280 W suction power at high speed and 150 W at low speed.
