Reducing hospital fuel costs naturally

By delivering natural daylight to all areas of a building, Monodraught SunPipes make a major contribution to the reduction of energy consumption in new build and refurbishment healthcare facilities.

SunPipes are being used in many hospitals across the UK (including Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham, Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield and Newham General Hospital, London) and receive very positive response from not only the architects and authorities, but also from nursing staff and patients.

One of the key requests from nurses is always for bright, spacious interiors with direct and ambient daylight so as to ensure that staff, patients and visitors do not spend any length of time in an environment that depends on artificial lighting. Documented evidence has shown that the design of hospital environments with particular emphasis on well lit space and good natural daylight can impact directly on the recovery rate of patients.

A number of recent installations at Heartlands Hospital Birmingham have resulted in an instant transformation providing remarkable energy free lighting into what was previously a dark, dingy and depressing internal central corridor lit by fluorescent tubes. The installation of the SunPipes can be linked to lighting sensors and LUX balancers to maintain the lighting level throughout the year resulting in a saving, estimated by the energy manager at Heartlands of at least 75% of the electricity normally consumed during daytime use.
