Total Gas & Power has been named as the NHS’s natural gas supplier, following a competitive tender process.
It has been awarded a 3 year 9 month contract to supply 200 million therms per year of natural gas to NHS sites across England. Covering a large majority of the NHS’s gas supply, the contract started on 1 June 2007 and will run until 31 March 2011. The agreement is for one of the public sector’s largest ever energy contracts and has a spend of approximately £350 million.
The announcement ends a period of speculation after a highly competitive tender process that included a number of the world’s leading utility companies.
The Total Gas & Power contract will provide the NHS with flexible approaches to gas procurement and has been tailored to meet the specific and unique requirements of the NHS. It enables the NHS to optimise energy costs through access to wholesale energy market pricing.
Clare Tunnicliffe of NHS Pasa said “We have awarded the business to Total Gas & Power because they have provided us with a supply solution that offers value for money for the NHS. We look forward to a successful and fruitful relationship over the next four years”
Jon Fieldsend, commercial director at Total Gas & Power added: “We are delighted to have won this major contract. We put together a strong tender for the NHS providing them with an adaptable approach to buying energy and a dedicated team to deliver first rate customer service for the duration of our relationship.”
