Work began last month on a new £12 m primary care centre in Barrow in Furness in Cumbria that will bring together primary care and community services on the site of a former school built in 1888 and given Grade 2 listing in 1993.
The new ‘BREEAM Excellent’ facility will be built by ECH Construction on a 5,000 m2 site developed through a Public Private Partnership Programme (LIFT) led by Community Health Partnerships (CHP), working with local joint venture partner, eLIFT Cumbria, with completion planned for Spring 2019.
CHP said: “Financial close is testament to the persistence and commercial solutions brought by eLIFT Cumbria, and the focus on a common outcome that public private partnership brings. This development shows how modern and historic architecture can work effectively together, and is designed to preserve and enhance the former listed school building, and to create a modern healthcare facility.”
The centre will combine several GP surgeries and community and children’s health services, while preserving the oldest part of the Victorian Alfred Barrow School building for office accommodation and the ambulance service.
