Upgrading may prove the most cost-effective option

How medical gas technology has developed to meet changing demands, and some of the practical and financial challenges when specifying and maintaining such equipment – including the dilemma as to whether to continue maintaining functioning existing plant or to upgrade or replace it.

Efficient and reliable medical gas systems are key to efficient and safe medical care. Here Andy Tudor, BeaconMedæs Business Line manager for UK Sales at Atlas Copco Medical UK’s Medical Gas Solutions operation, looks back at the history of BeaconMedæs, which is today well-recognised as one of the leading innovators in piped medical gas systems, and considers both how technology in the field has had advanced and developed to meet changing demands and evolving regulations and standards, and some of the practical and financial challenges for healthcare engineers specifying and maintaining such equipment.

BeaconMedæs, part of the Atlas Copco group (Atlas Copco Medical), is a leading global supplier of medical gas equipment – including medical air plant and medical vacuum plant, AGS plant, manifolds, and pipeline components manufactured to HTM 02-01 standards. UK service and installation of BeaconMedæs equipment has in recent years been undertaken under the Atlas Copco Medical brand, but, as reported in this January’s HEJ, ‘based on customer feedback and a realigned branding strategy’, these activities are now again being offered under the BeaconMedæs ‘umbrella’ (with no change to existing products or service contracts).
