Air intake screens protect HVAC equipment against airborne debris

Keen to protect its HVAC equipment from airborne debris and maintain its efficiency, the Central Middlesex Hospital sought a solution for 28 locations adjacent to London’s A40.

RABScreen, the external air intake screen specialist, distributor GVS Filtration, and its client, Bouygues, successfully bid for the job, and the team then subsequently fully surveyed all the hospital locations. Much of the work had to be completed at weekends, and there were several problems to address – 10 of the supply ducts were drawing air from high-level louvres, access required scaffolding, and internal duct access was difficult.

The hospital maintenance team sought a mesh screen that could be inserted into existing ductwork, and then simply withdrawn for future maintenance. By working with partner company, AJM Ventilation, ‘an exceptional ductwork installer’, RABScreen was able to modify the ductwork to receive new filter boxes. The RABScreen solution was installed within the supply filter box to simplify screen insertion.

Now the local airborne debris is kept away from the disposable filters, which RABScreen says will extend their lifespan by up to 60%. This ‘frontline protection’ allowed the introduction of the ‘highly efficient’ GVS Bacticell screens, which sit behind RABScreen’s mesh material, improving efficiency and accommodating high pressure differentials between changes.
