Effective data management for health sector

Xerox Global Services (XGS) has issued a warning to the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors about the lack of document and knowledge sharing tools that could "send both sectors into meltdown".

The warning is the result of a study commissioned by XGS which looked at the volume of e-mails stored by different industry sectors and its impact on storage space, information sharing and worker productivity. Results showed that managers in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry are among the worst in the country when it comes to the management of e-mail. In many cases, managers were found to be in the habit of printing out e-mails en masse, leading to an overload of hard copy, information and paper storage problems.

XGS questioned over 500 managers from a range of UK companies and found that healthcare and pharmaceutical managers had an estimated 696 e-mails in their inbox, compared to an average of 377 across all industries, despite managers in this industry receiving fewer e-mails than average daily.

In light of the findings of this survey, XGS has devised a best practice guide to the management of e-mails.

The special guide covers the management of large attachments and logical folder structures, as well as suggesting alternative ways of communicating.
