Royal Free Hampstead Trust reduces waiting lists

The Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust has purchased the C-cam (Cardiac Gamma Camera) for its eight different sites across north London and Hertfordshire to help reduce waiting lists by doubling the number of patients studied in a single day.

The new equipment is expected to speed up patient throughput and once fully operational, the camera will be able to carry out studies on 12 patients per day, compared to six patients before. The C-cam will enable the Royal Free to carry out Gated SPECT radioventriculograms for the first time.

The C-cam is a dedicated cardiac gamma camera. It features a reclining chair that allows the patient to sit back comfortably throughout the imaging procedure, decreasing patient motion and subsequently improving diagnostic image quality. It is compact, with an 8ft by 8ft system footprint that fits easily into most exam rooms.

“Our mission is to be an outstanding London teaching hospital that is recognised locally, nationally and internationally for delivering excellence in patient care, teaching and research. The Royal Free hospital is always extremely busy. Reducing the length of time needed to examine patients will help to improve the care we provide. With the new C-cam, we will be able to carry out more studies than ever before,” commented Dr Andrew Hilson, Consultant in Nuclear Medicine.

It is also hoped that with reduced waiting lists at the hospital, the department will be able to take on patients from other PCTs which, in turn, will generate income for the department and Trust.
