WYG selected for design engineering role

Following on from its appointment as client advisor on the £24 m state-of-the-art Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in February 2006, White Young Green (WYG) has been selected to undertake a design engineering role on the £2 m fit-out of the third floor of the building.

The consultant has provided detailed design works for the mechanical and electrical services systems on the floor that will house part of the Centre for Tropical and Infectious Diseases. The level will comprise new laboratory spaces for research into the eradication of malaria and other infectious diseases and is due to be completed in November 2008.

Seamus Cooke, project director at WYG, explained: “Due to the complex and technical nature of the requirements of this floor we have had to ensure that the design and construction approach of the mechanical and electrical services systems will not in any way adversely affect the rest of the main building’s systems, which need to remain operational during the fit-out of this level. This has proved to be challenging, but our past experience in this field has set us in good stead. In particular, the design of the containment laboratories has been planned to the strictest standards.”

Alistair McGuffie, project manager at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, added: “The main building should finish on time and to budget and, once completed, the Centre for Tropical and Infectious Diseases will underpin our role as a centre of excellence devoted primarily to tropical health, and aiding the research and development of new drugs and vaccines to fight diseases that are devastating the developing world.”
