Northern Ireland members steered round car plant

Fifty-two members of the IHEEM’s Northern Ireland Branch recently visited the vast Jaguar Body Assembly and Paint Factory in Castle Bromwich in the West Midlands, enjoying an informative tour with the focus on innovative engineering solutions used in production processes.

Specially constructed for wartime aircraft production in 1938, the plant was bought after the war by Fisher & Ludlow, which produced car bodies for Rover and Jaguar there until 1953 when it was taken over by the British Motor Corporation.

Today the factory, which has 93 acres of manufacturing space and a 3,000- strong workforce, is owned by Jaguar, which produces cars including its S-Type, XJ, XK, and very recently introduced XF model there.

The IHEEM group was extremely impressed both with the scale of the facility and the complex engineering management systems in place to control the quality, cost and safety of critical production functions.
