Mobile cleaning unit a claimed UK first

A new mobile cleansing unit, said to be the country’s first of its kind, that enables hospital equipment including beds to be wheeled in, disinfected, and thoroughly steam cleaned, has been officially unveiled at the Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust in Norwich.

The Mobile Equipment Cleansing Unit, developed by two Trust staff – John Downes, a member of the estates team and Val Leggett, a nurse consultant in infection control – was developed with support from Health Enterprise East (HEE), the region’s NHS hub. Kent-based Air Management Systems (AMS), which specialises in helping organisations manage hazardous materials, built the prototype.

The device’s mobility is particularly beneficial for multi-site Trusts and also enables noisy steam cleaning to be performed away from the ward. HEE helped develop the concept, after it had been entered in its Innovation competition, by drawing up a confidential disclosure agreement between the Trust and Air Management Systems, match funding the costs of developing a prototype.

Rob Donald, HEE innovation manager, said: “Frontline staff working in the NHS are in the best possible position to see how a simple idea can be transformed into a product or service delivery improvement to help patients. Any way to improve infection control is a hospital environment is to be welcomed.”
