Work starts on Salford Royal

Construction work has started on the new £136 m Salford Royal hospital designed by architects RyderHKS, which is working for the Balfour Beatty specialist healthcare concession company Consort Healthcare in conjunction with HSBC Infrastructure Fund Management on the Salford PFI project following financial close last September.

Contractors for the hospital, expected to be completed in 2012, are Balfour Beatty Construction, with Haden Young for electrical and mechanical systems work and Haden Building Management supplying facilities management. The project involves redevelopment of existing buildings and construction of a 36,000 m2 clinical building, education centre and multi-story car park. The clinical block incorporates comprehensive renal services, an acute intestinal failure unit and integrated outpatients/ inpatient urology, an emergency village, and 46 new critical care beds.

David Lewis, architectural director, RyderHKS, said: “Our solution exploits the full potential of the site, providing fit-for-purpose facilities to replace the Victorian wards, and the creation of a cohesive healthcare campus based on a robust development control plan.”
