Ante-natal unit built in 16 weeks

Portakabin has worked closely with the estates team at Dunfermline’s Queen Margaret Hospital and the hospital’s architect to design a new standalone ante-natal unit in just 16 weeks after hospital chiefs decided more space was needed in the main building for a new medical admissions unit.

Alan Henderson, estates officer at Queen Margaret Hospital, said: “We needed the new building up and running within eight months, so a modular building was the best option. We put the work out to competitive tender and Portakabin came back with a winning proposal that offered the best solution in terms of building quality, value and ability to deliver on time.”
Featuring consulting and treatment rooms, an ultrasound scan suite, daycare room, administration offices, a reception, two waiting areas, a children’s play area, toilets and staff changing area, as well as a base for the region’s community midwives, the new building complies both with the architect’s specification and with all NHS requirements. It is formed from Portakabin’s Ultima modules; Portakabin also fitted a canopy over the main entrance door, added skylights above the central waiting area and supplied a full fire alarm system.
Working to a short lead time, Portakabin delivered and installed the modules onto pre-prepared foundation, with much of the fitting out completed prior to delivery, and the interior and connection to services completed once the facility was in place. The building was constructed under the Portakabin Customer Charter, which promises all buildings will be delivered on time and on budget.
The midwives and nurses can now provide a full range of ante-natal services, including daycare, scans, ante-natal, obstetric and paediatric clinics, parenthood classes and physiotherapy.
