Capsule surfaces after 80 years

A time capsule placed inside the walls of the former Lytham Hospital in 1928 containing coins and stamps from the 1920s, a newspaper, and the hospital’s Annual report, was recently found during the demolition of the hospital buildings to make room for the new Lytham Primary Care Centre.

Work has just started on the multi-million pound, 4,500 m2 Centre, being developed by Primary Asset, which will incorporate 22 consulting rooms, a GP treatment suite, physiotherapy/ occupational therapy space, PCT diagnostics, treatment rooms, minor operations rooms, a pharmacy, café and parking for 163 cars.

The time capsule, originally buried inside the walls when the Lytham Hospital was built, was also found to contain coins from an earlier period, some dating from 1871 when the first hospital on the site was constructed.

Arrangements are being made to put its contents on public display, with the local community being asked what should be placed in a new capsule to be buried as part of the new facility.
