Built with military precision

A facility said to be the UK’s biggest primary healthcare centre, the £30 million Aldershot Centre for Health, is entering its fit out phase, following practical completion of the 140,000ft2 building.

Developer The Wilky Group and its main contractor Carillion are in the process of handing over to Hampshire PCT and the Army, who will share the building, with a wide range of medical services set to come on stream over the summer. More than 400 staff from three local GP practices, three NHS Trusts, medical teams serving the needs of some 5,000 service personnel based in and around Aldershot from the Army’s Aldershot Garrison, and various communitybased services, are relocating to the Centre, which is comparable in size to a community hospital.

Once fully open, an anticipated 2,700 patients a day will benefit from a range of diagnostic, treatment and therapeutic services, including podiatry, retail pharmacy and dentistry, as well as specialist equipment such

as X-ray and a CT scanner. Wilky will maintain and manage the building throughout the index-linked 30- year lease, which the company says “blends the best features of PFI, PPP, LIFT, 3PD and commercial practice”.

The NHS and MoD will own the centre outright once the lease ends.
