B.Braun Sterilog recently helped get operations at Birmingham’s The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH) rapidly back on schedule after problems in the hospital’s sterilising department forced it to cancel the majority of its operating lists over a three-day period.
Part of the B.Braun Group, B.Braun Strerilog has invested £10 million in the centre, which is now handling decontamination and sterilisation of surgical instruments from 10 hospitals in the West Midlands, in partnership with eight acute NHS Trusts and primary care Trusts.
Alongside King’s Norton, B.Braun Sterilog has also recently finished refurbishing an existing sterile services department at Heartlands Hospital, Yardley Green. Utilising the latest processing technologies, and incorporating modern systems for tracking surgical instruments throughout their lifecycle, the new decontamination centres have the capacity to handle work from acute hospitals, primary care Trusts, GP networks and dental practices.
B Braun Sterilog md Richard Matthews added: “Previously surgical instruments were processed by individual hospitals, but this project has centralised services, in modern ‘super centres’ fully compliant with new EU regulations, that have a lot more back-up facilities to ensure delivery of a 365-day-a-year service.”
