Washington Accord: The number of
countries signed up to this mutual
recognition agreement increased in the
summer when JABEE (Japan
Accreditation Board for Engineering
Education) became a full signatory.
This means that engineering programmes accredited by JABEE are accepted by ECUK as meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Having considered the circumstances the ECUK has decided that this acceptance shall be with immediate effect and that applicants with JABEE accredited degrees awarded from 2005 onwards will be accepted.
Following consideration of the report of the WA team which carried out the periodic review of the ECUK accreditation system, the WA signatories have agreed that ECUK accredited degrees will continue to be recognised under the Accord for a further six years.
Mentoring for Registration: The ECUK conducted, in the summer, three seminars on “Mentoring for Registration”. Thirty-eight staff and members attended from 25 Institutions.
Due to the high level of interest, further seminars will be run. The output of the seminars has been summarised in a Guideline document which identifies the key issues involved and aims to assist Institutions to set up or improve their mentoring process.
Science Council and the Society for the Environment: ECUK continues to work closely with these organisations in an effort to harmonise the approach to licensing, registration and accreditation. For further information about the Engineering Council UK, visit
