The Northern Ireland Health Group (NIHG), a private sector consortium working with international property and construction consultancy Cyril Sweett, has been appointed to deliver a new 315-bed acute hospital outside Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, with a capital value of £267 million.
The hospital will provide care for 290,000 people living in the Western Trust Area. At over 60,000 m2, it will occupy a 57-acre greenfield site, incorporating an accident and emergency ward, theatres, day procedures, maternity and paediatric units, and general acute wards, together with 121 key worker apartments.
Construction should start next year, with planned completion in 2012. Architect Anshen + Allen said: “The design strategy successfully breaks down the massing of this large-scale hospital to create a building form which appears to have grown out of the landscape. A palette of predominantly natural materials was used to reflect the local vernacular, comprising a natural stone base, extensive wood and glass, and pitched roofs. A linear garden, running the building’s length, brings natural light and the richly landscaped campus into the hospital’s heart.”
