Ground-breaking event

Sheffield City Council chief executive John Mothersole and Master Cutler Gordon Bridge (pictured left and right respectively with David Oates, Hans Hux and Liam Grottick of B. Braun) have helped start construction of a £2 million state-of-the-art medical facility in Sheffield.

The private and public sector figureheads were on-hand to dig the first piece of turf for B. Braun Medical’s new aseptic unit at its Thorncliffe Park headquarters, which will feature one of Europe’s most advanced drug preparation robots. The cytotoxic robot, one of only a handful in Europe, and only the UK’s second, can manipulate highly toxic, time-sensitive drugs for chemotherapy patients. It will enable B. Braun Medical to prepare drugs with a very limited shelf life and distribute them to any destination within a two-hour radius.

The 1,080 m2 aseptic unit will be the region’s first outsourcing unit to manufacture and deliver sterile prescription drugs to hospitals, including pre-filled syringes, parenteral feeding systems and pain control medication. It will boast three production rooms, cold stores, a laboratory, and office facilities.
